População: 12.525

A povoação de São Sebastião do Areado teve início em 1823, a partir da doação de uma área de 500 hectares feita por Antônio dos Reis Rosa e João Marques de Araújo. Com a abertura de uma clareira em plena mata, foi iniciada a construção de uma capela, em torno da qual desenvolveu-se o núcleo habitacional da futura cidade. Em 1911, o povoado foi elevado a vila, com o nome de Vila Gomes, desmembrada de Alfenas. Em 1919, passou a denominar-se Areado, emancipando-se em 1925. O espaço onde se localiza Areado corresponde à área de inundação da represa de Furnas. Com a construção da barragem, a cidade ficou circundada por belos lagos. À margem deles existem vários atrativos, como praias fluviais e áreas para camping e pesca, que levam o município a ser chamado de "Morada dos Peixes". Dentre as comemorações folclórico-religiosas, destaca-se a do padroeiro São Sebastião, realizada em janeiro, que se caracteriza por folguedos populares tais como congado e caiapós.

Areado é uma cidadezinha simpática, bem pequena, que fica próximo a Alfenas/MG. Meu irmão mora lá já faz uns 3 anos. Ele se casou com uma areadense e trabalha em uma rádio, a "ZeroFM", que é bem conhecida na região. Ele me pediu pra arrumar uma entrevista exclusiva com o Evandro... será que eu consigo?!... Estive por lá no começo de Maio. Areado fica há uns 200 km daqui de Franca/SP...
